La Merce 2009 - Pan y Circo

¿Al pueblo, pan y circo? Arropada por la calidez del veranillo de San Miguel, Barcelona se ha sumergido un año más en las festividades de la Mercè con un ecléctico programa de actividades y espectáculos gratuitos. Decenas de actuaciones en directo pueblan una variada e integradora agenda cultural orientada a todos los públicos que este año nos dejó a muchos, el regusto agridulce de la constriccón.

Reducto de la que antaño fuera una capital cosmopolita, Barcelona ha presentado una descafeinada agenda de actividades digna de cenicientas en la que los eventos nocturnos no satisfacían las clamorosas demandas de unos asistentes que desanimados, deambulaban en busca de acción noctámbula en horario de adultos. Mayoritariamente ambientadas en el seno del barrio gótico, el lado oscuro de las fiestas masivas se puso de manifiesto con la clara ausencia de infraestructuras y equipamiento urbano fruto de una carente planificación. Sorteando las amontonadas latas vacías que rebosaban los habituales contenedores, los usuarios de un decadente bicing deambulaban por el centro sosteniendo un manillar donde antaño hubiera una bebida, condenados por un infradimensionado servicio de transporte a perderse las propuestas lúdicas.

En el corazón de un año de carestía previo a las elecciones, la oferta de entretenimiento denotaba la ausencia de presupuesto y de voluntad mientras la elevada asistencia subrayaba de nuevo las imperiosas necesidades que quedan por cubrir.

Right at the end of the summer, once again, Barcelona celebrates the local festivities with a wide and eclectic leisure offer free of charge. Dozens of activities compose a global cultural agenda for all ages but this year, some of us find a certain constriction flavour.

Like in a summer dream of the cosmopolitan capital it used to be, Barcelona has introduced a light proposal for Cinderellas where night events were clearly under the expectations of many attendants that unsatisfied, were looking for some true Spanish nightlife demonstrations. Most of the activities took place in the very hearth of the Gothic District, a lovely and historic area that has clearly suffered the lack of planning in terms of infrastructures and public equipments. Surfing tons of empty cans resting on the street, the users of the very only public transportation with access to the area other than their bare feet, Bicing – a rent-a-bike public service – had to hold for hours a bike instead of a drink thanks to a far too miscalculated service that melted down in the worst possible time.

Facing a year clearly marked by the crisis and with the upcoming elections in our politician’s minds, the leisure offer clearly showed a lack of budget and interest whilst the massive attendance rate highlighted the basic needs still to be covered.

Fashion's Night Out - King for one night!

En una calurosa noche de verano, Vogue decide convertir a un elenco de invitados en reinas y reyes por un día, en un brillante ardid comercial que traspasa fronteras. Como si de auténticas cenicientas se tratase, una plétora de jóvenes enfundados en sus mejores galas imprimen su personal estilo por las calles de la ciudad al acecho de una cara conocida y una copa de champagne.

Pero no todo es glamour en la noche de puertas abiertas, el lado más canalla de los eventos populares no tardó en aflorar. Sorteando el trasiego de camareros con bandejas de canapés vacías y la intimidante mirada de los atentos promotores ávidos de hacer caja, deambulan por las tiendas buscando aguinaldos, veinteañeras de extrarradio desesperadas por encontrar su propio caballero Armani. Mientras nuestras más televisivas caras reviven su propio Sexo en Nueva York ante los flashes de la prensa más sagaz, ajenas a la jauría que se acecha.

Acompañado por un grupo sin parangón – incluyendo a nuestra conocidísima Condesa – la inmersión en la noche madrileña más fashion me condujo a casa con las manos vacías pero el espíritu colmado por la belleza y la mirada turbia por las burbujas del champagne.

¿Creéis que una jornada de puertas abiertas nocturna resulta productiva comercialmente? ¿Quién quiere cargar bolsas por la noche mientras las copas se nos escapan ante los ojos? ¿Alguien más fue al Fashion’s Night Out?

Like in a summer night's dream, yesterday Vogue helped many people to finally picture themselves as queens and kings for one night thanks to a wise commercial strategy. Like real Cinderellas, zillions of fashionistas walked down to their own fashion Meccas with their best outfits looking for celebrities and free champagne.

But popular events have dark side, and Vogue’s was no exception. Trying to avoid the far too many waiters with empty trays and the eager eyes of the bonus avid PRs, some outskirts teenagers’ were desperately seeking for a bright and shinny Armani Knight. In the meantime, our most popular socialites stayed on the red carpet and lived they own Sex and The City for the cameras, ignoring the crowd.

I dived in Madrid’s most fashion night with the very best group – including the very well known Condesa – and I ended going to my place with no presents but with my spirit fed with the beauty and my eyes dizzy after a night in champagne.

Hace exactamente 27 años, tras un largo y penoso vía crucis bajo un sol atronador, abría los ojos al mundo un pequeño saltimbanqui de la vida, un funámbulo de las palabras, un pequeño esteta adorador de las causas perdidas con un ojo crítico implacable y un indudablemente ecléctico estilo propio. Señoras y señores: ya soy oficialmente, un año mayor!!!

Bogota: Welcome to El Dorado!!

¿Cuánto conocéis de Colombia? Originariamente denominada Bacatá, en la antigua civilización muisca, Bogotá es una moderna capital injustamente alejada del habitual vivero de destinos aparentemente turísticos que cuenta con una oferta gastronómica, lúdica y cultural que acentúa unas abismales diferencias con algunos de sus vecinos países. Con una estructura matemática propia de cualquier urbe americana, perderse en las calles del centro de la ciudad es un ejercicio de voluntad personal que brindándonos grandes sorpresas, nos permite revivir la leyenda de El Dorado así como los gloriosos años del Imperialismo español, mientras descubrimos cuán orgullosos están de su propia historia.

Situada a más de 2.600 metros de altitud, uno no puede más que sentirse obnubilado ante las modernas edificaciones que coexisten con increíbles exponentes de la arquitectura colonial. Delimitada por los cerros que deleitaron al botánico José Celestino Mutis, la capital de Colombia contiene además tres grandes parques que diluyen la sensación de hacinamiento que muestran las grandes metrópolis.

Líder indiscutible de un controvertido país en pie de guerra, Bogotá es una ciudad en la que la prudencia es una compañera de viaje necesaria, pero no la paranoia. Tras una semana recorriendo las calles y atracciones turísticas que esta ciudad sin parangón ofrece, uno no puede más que desear librarse de todas las responsabilidades para explorar este desconocido país cuyas gentes afirman hablar el mejor español del mundo!! Bogotá es una ciudad fría pero sus habitantes son tan cálidos como en cualquier rincón del trópico. Señores y señoras, contra todo pronóstico, el peligro es que os queráis quedar!

How well do you know Colombia? Originally named Bacatá, Bogotá is a modern capital unfairly out placed in the sexy-tourist-destinations list with a cultural, leisure and gastronomic offer that highlights the existing differences with some neighbour countries. The arithmetical structure of the city drives us to any American city so do some of the main buildings in town. Walking down the old city centre we will surely find some treasures that will revive the El Dorado’s myth and the glorious years of Spanish Imperialism, while we discover how proud they are of their own history.

Located over 2.600 meters, the minute we step out of the plane we can feel a slight dizziness as we contemplate how the modern buildings coexist with the unbelievably well preserved colonial examples. Some large hills limit the size and the growth rate of the city and combined with the three main parks the city includes, they dilute the pollution and they give a sense of space that many self-called cosmopolitan metropolis don’t happen to have.

Leading a noisy country aiming to stand for their beliefs, Bogota is a city where prudence is a welcomed travel mate nor is paranoia. Just in one week the city manages to seduce you erasing all the existing boundaries and prejudices with the soft and musical Colombian accent. Bogota is certainly a cold city, but it’s citizens are as warm as anywhere in the tropic. Ladies and gentlemen, the main risk is that you’ll want to stay longer!
